Stress management wearable unveiled at London Tech WeekJune 13th, 2017
Sensate Device Uses Sub-audible Sound Waves to Lower Stress Levels
Sensate is the first device to both track biometric stress markers and reduce stress levels, on the spot, giving the wearer the ability to reach meditation-like states to promote enhanced relaxation. According to the World Health Organisation, stress-related illnesses cost the UK economy £43bn each year.
The small, pebble-like device is placed comfortably against the chest and collects biometric data on stress markers, including heart rate, respiration, posture, temperature and mood. This data is fed back to the Sensate app on the wearer’s smartphone, which uses proprietary algorithms to analyse the data and calculate the optimum therapeutic response of Sensate for the wearer.
Based on the app algorithm, a patent-pending biofeedback loop causes the Sensate device to emit sub-audible sound waves that are felt through the chest rather than heard, and have been demonstrated to have a calming effect on the autonomic nervous system and vagus nerve.
Stimulating the vagus nerve is scientifically proven to lower stress levels, however it is notoriously difficult to consciously control this nerve without years of meditation or yoga training; until now.
Sensate also uses headphones to deliver pleasing natural sounds and music integrated with sound waves that guide brain activity towards specific frequencies.
BioSelf Technology CEO, Stefan Chmelik is the founder of the Harley Street-based New Medicine Group, which is the UK’s leading integrated healthcare centre.
“I see the need for this technology every day in my clinic,” said Chmelik. “Stress has a huge and growing impact on the daily lives of people all over the world, and we have developed SENSATE to directly combat the negative effect that it is having on society.”
Sensate users experience a pleasurable sensation as the sounds and vibrations resonate through the body via bone conduction and earphones. In essence – the device monitors and responds to the user’s biological signs of stress in real-time.
“Regular meditation is well-established as one of the most effective ways to self-manage stress, however few people have the time to learn or practise this important skill,” said Jacob Skinner, CTO, BioSelf Technology. “Sensate provides a solution to the growing stress epidemic in a time-poor generation.”
Sensate is being shown this week at the TechXLR8 exhibition at the ExCel in London as part of London Tech Week. Nine Degree Products is hosting an opportunity for people to experience Sensate at stand IoT402.
BioSelf Technology will be launching an equity crowdfunding campaign on Crowdcube later in June.
