“Using Sensate in a single 20 minute session quiets the mind and improves relaxation”
Study conducted by Bioself Technology and TM Studio Research Lab in Lisbon, Portugal.
Background
This study explores the effects of a single, 20 minute Sensate Session on physical markers of stress and relaxation, brain activity associated with relaxation, focus, meditation and self-reported emotional state.
Study designs
-24 (21-64) participants experiencing moderate stress according to the Perceived Stress Scale completed the study. Their physical and brain responses were monitored through three conditions, 10 minutes of silence to establish baseline 1, followed by a 20 minute Sensate Session, followed by another 10 minutes of silence to establish baseline 2.
-The measures included Electroencephalogram (EEG) to observe brain activity, an Electrocardiogram (ECG) to observe heart rate and heart rate variability, Galvanic Skin Response (GSR) to assess arousal, Transthoracic Impedance Measurement (TIM) to observe breathing patterns, and Biomedical Stress Thermometer (T) to observe body temperature.
-Participants’ emotions before and after the treatment were also assessed using the Discrete Emotions Questionnaire (DEQ). The DEQ lists 32 emotions, and participants rate to what extent they feel that emotion at that time.
Outcomes
-80% of participants said their experience of Sensate was excellent or very good.
-26% increase in meditation-like Theta brainwaves.
-27% decrease in stress-like Beta brainwaves.
Conclusions
-Statistically significant decrease in heart rate, decrease in frontal Beta EEG activity, increase in frontal Theta EEG activity, and changes in self-reported emotions.
-This study provides scientific evidence that a single 20 minute Sensate session has immediate, measurable effects on the body, brain, and the way people feel.
